United States of America: Policy Counsel- Transitional Justice Initiative

The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Policy Counsel who will lead CVT’s Transitional Justice Initiative, a growing organizational effort that seeks to incorporate trauma-informed principles and victim/survivor-centered approaches into transitional justice mechanisms. This position will also be responsible for further developing efforts in CVT’s international programs to collect data on human rights violations reported by CVT clients.

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota with offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect research, analyze findings, and prepare written documents, including reports, blogs, articles for publication, and policy documents, for use in public education and policy advocacy. Remain current on transitional justice initiatives and developments in target countries.
  • Engage in public education and policy advocacy activities. Share information with Congressional offices, U.S. federal agencies, UN agencies, non-governmental and governmental partners, and the media.
  • Engage CVT colleagues internally in discussions regarding research, analysis, findings and recommendations, as well as in the establishment of strategic partnerships, primarily related to transitional justice and accountability efforts.
  • Prepare reports for grant administration purposes. Participate in fundraising to sustain project activities.
  • Other Responsibilities: Participate in other department and organization- wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

· Juris Doctorate

· Two years of experience in policy analysis and advocacy

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

· Excellent research skills

· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word and Excel)

· Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills

· Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)

· Knowledge of human rights law and demonstrated understanding of international legal frameworks

· Ability to travel nationally and internationally. See details in the Travel section below

· Arabic language skills (speaking and writing), preferred
